At Longwood Dental Group, we have been caring for Brookline and Greater Boston patients for over 40 years from our conveniently located office at 1842 Beacon Street. Our dentists in Brookline bring together general dentists and specialists under one roof, meaning that whatever your emergency requires, our team can assess and treat it without sending you elsewhere. We open at 7 a.m. five days a week and offer extended evening hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays to make urgent care as accessible as possible
What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
Not every dental problem can wait until your next routine checkup. Some conditions require prompt attention to relieve pain, prevent infection from spreading, and preserve the tooth itself. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tooth disorders account for nearly 1.9 million emergency department visits per year in the United States. Many of those visits are entirely avoidable when patients have access to a responsive dental practice.
Common dental emergencies we see and treat include:
- Severe toothache: Persistent, intense pain often signals an infection or damaged pulp that requires immediate evaluation
- Knocked-out tooth: Time is critical; a tooth reimplanted within an hour has a significantly higher chance of surviving
- Cracked or fractured tooth: A crack that reaches the root can progress quickly without treatment
- Dental abscess: A bacterial infection that appears as swelling, visible pus, or a pimple-like bump on the gums requires prompt care to prevent it from spreading
- Lost or broken crown or filling: Exposed tooth structure is vulnerable to pain and further damage
- Soft tissue injuries: Cuts or lacerations to the lips, cheeks, or tongue may require professional care to heal properly
A dental emergency does not always look dramatic, but ignoring the signs rarely makes the problem smaller.
Why Prompt Treatment Matters
When a dental emergency goes untreated, the consequences typically grow. An abscess can spread beyond the tooth into surrounding tissues, potentially becoming a serious systemic health concern. A cracked tooth that might have been saved with a dental crown today may require extraction next month. Root canal treatment can often rescue a tooth that appears lost when addressed quickly, eliminating infection and restoring full function.
Protecting the Tooth
The window for saving a knocked-out permanent tooth is narrow. If a tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently with water without scrubbing, and either place it back in the socket or keep it in a cup of milk while you get to our office. Acting within 30 to 60 minutes dramatically improves the odds of a successful reimplantation.
Managing Pain Before You Arrive
Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication can help manage discomfort, and a cold compress held against the outside of the cheek can reduce swelling. These measures address symptoms only and are not a substitute for treatment. Contact our office as soon as possible so we can advise you and schedule you at the earliest available time.
Emergency Care for a Wide Range of Conditions
Because Longwood Dental Group is a multi-specialty practice, we handle the full spectrum of dental emergencies. Our periodontists address urgent gum disease and abscess cases. Our endodontist, Dr. Zachary Kano, handles root canal emergencies with precision and efficiency. Our prosthodontic team, led by Dr. Peter Grieco handle broken or lost restorations the same day when possible.
This depth of in-house capability means that when you call with an emergency, you are not being triaged and redirected. You are seen by the right clinician from the start. We also have an on-site dental laboratory and CEREC technology, which allows us to produce same-appointment restorations for certain cases rather than sending you home with a temporary.
Our team speaks eight languages, including Arabic, Armenian, French, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Tagalog, ensuring clear communication during what is already a stressful experience.
