CEREC Same-Day Crowns: How the Technology Works

CEREC Same-Day Crowns: How the Technology Works

A cracked molar rarely waits for a convenient week to make itself known, and treatment shouldn’t stretch across several weeks either. Traditionally, getting a crown meant one appointment to prepare the tooth, a temporary crown to wear in the meantime, and a second visit after a dental lab finished the permanent restoration.

Longwood Dental Group uses CEREC technology to design and create dental crowns right in the office, making it possible to complete many crowns in a single appointment. Instead of leaving with a temporary and returning weeks later, you may be able to have the tooth prepared, scanned, restored, and checked for fit before you leave. Here is what happens during that process.

How Does a CEREC Same-Day Crown Appointment Work?

Your appointment starts the same way as any crown procedure. Your dentist numbs the area and removes any decayed or damaged tooth structure to prepare a clean surface for the new crown. From there, the process changes completely. Instead of biting into a tray of thick impression material, you sit still for a few seconds while a small digital scanner captures a detailed 3D image of your tooth, the surrounding teeth, and your bite. That image appears on a chairside screen almost instantly, giving your dentist a clear look at the exact shape the new crown needs to fill.

That digital scan goes directly into CEREC’s design software, where your dentist shapes a crown that matches your bite and the contours of your neighboring teeth. A milling unit carves the crown from a solid block of ceramic, such as lithium disilicate or zirconia, right in our general dentistry office while you wait. Once the crown is milled, your dentist checks the fit, color, and bite, adjusts it as needed, and bonds it permanently in place, all in one visit. You leave with a finished restoration instead of a temporary one, with no second appointment to plan around.

Why Same-Day Crowns Make Sense for Your Smile

Beyond the convenience, same-day crowns offer real advantages over the traditional two-visit process. Before scheduling, it helps to understand the following factors that set this approach apart:

  • Fewer appointments: You complete the entire process, from prep to permanent crown, in a single visit rather than returning weeks later.
  • No temporary crown: You skip the loose, easily dislodged temporary that traditional crowns require between visits.
  • Precise fit: Digital scanning captures more detail than a traditional impression, which supports a more accurate fit.
  • Natural appearance: Ceramic blocks are shaded and milled to blend with your surrounding teeth.

These benefits make same-day crowns a practical option for anyone balancing dental care with a busy schedule, and they matter just as much for patients who are also weighing other cosmetic changes, such as porcelain veneers, alongside a crown.

Is a Same-Day CEREC Crown Right for You?

Same-day crowns work well for many situations that bring patients to a general dentist, including a cracked or fractured tooth, a large filling that has started to fail, or a tooth that needs coverage after a root canal. Research on chairside ceramic crowns supports what patients experience in the chair, including a University of Michigan clinical evaluation of chairside CAD/CAM crowns that tracked lithium disilicate restorations over several years to assess how well they hold up compared with traditional lab-made crowns.

We will examine the tooth and review your digital scan together with you before recommending a same-day crown, so you know exactly why it is the right fit for your case. You are never rushed into deciding, and we explain every option in plain language before you commit to treatment.

Not every situation calls for the same approach, and that is fine. Some teeth need a lab-fabricated crown or a different restoration altogether, particularly when several teeth need attention at once, or the bite is more complex. We will walk you through the reasoning behind whichever option best protects your tooth, so the decision never feels like guesswork.
